Remembering Austin

The unexpected death has occurred recently, after a   short illness, of a long-time member of Dublin Bay Sailing Club, Austin Whelan. Austin and his wife Gwen joined the Club in the 1980’s as members of the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club. They competed in many cruiser and one design classes.

Members will remember the numerous boats that they sailed in Dublin Bay, amounting surely to about twenty.  Asked about Austin’s penchant for changing boats, one of his crew remembers  “Austin loved boats but he also loved changing them”. Some of them are still being sailed competitively, such as  Red Rhum, Billy Whizz and Quest.

As well as winning many trophies in Cruisers 1, 2 and 3, Austin’s name also appears on the historic Waterhouse Shield, awarded annually by DBSC for the best-performing boat in handicapped classes.  Based on his success in the inaugural ICRA championship in Spring Fever, he also represented Cruisers 2 in Irish Sailing’s National Helmsman Championship in 2003.

Our commiserations are with Austin’s wife Gwen, his family, his crew and many friends  in the DMYC.
